This study of mortality among women ages 15-49 is related to the larger Pathway to Child Health survey, i.e., the same provinces, the same sample frame, persons were interviewed during the same time period, and the same families were interviewed. However, the focus of this study is on the deaths that occurred to women 15-49 years of age and including maternal deaths. Objectives of the investigation were: 1) to collect information on causes of and factors contributing to death among women of reproductive age 2) to estimate the proportion of deaths among women of reproductive age due to pregnancy-related causes in the four previously mentioned provinces.

The impending demands of adulthood make adolescence a time of intensive preparation. Success depends greatly on the health care and basic education provided during these fleeting years. For young women, greater control over
sexuality and reproduction may benefit every social and economic aspect of their lives.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)responds to adolescents in the context of their overall life situation, supporting activities that address their holistic well-being and help achieve their full potential. UNFPA recognizes that young people's education, health and life opportunities will determine the world's economic and social prospects in the 21st century.

A Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) survey was conducted by NorthEast Cambodia Reproductive Health Program (NCRHP) in the Chhlong Operational District of Kratie province, Cambodia, from June 14-22, 1999. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of women of reproductive age (15-45) with regard to reproduction and pregnancy, contraceptive knowledge and use, fertility preferences, STDs and AIDS, and abortion. Information from this survey serves as a baseline for NCRHP. It is also being used to guide development of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, and to focus the efforts of the program's Community-Based Distribution (CBD) workers.

This study was carried out in conjunction with four other studies looking at different aspects of "Women in socio-economic transition". These studies were initiated after a workshop held in Thailand in June 1994'aiming to compare the impact of a changing economy on women's health, education, decision-making and migration in four countries of the region: China, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. One of the main objectives of these studies was to train a group of Cambodian women in research, bringing into focus issues to be addressed at the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in September 1995. Another goal was to identify women interested in qualitative research in the hope that they would later benefit from further training in or outside the country.

This report assesses the current situation in the areas of population and development, reproductive health and gender, and proposes recommendations for strategic actions for addressing identified critical needs. The situational analysis has been guided by the International Conference on Population and Development - Programme of Action (ICPD-PoA). The ICPD recognised that population and development are inextricably linked and both depend on the empowerment of women. It focused on meeting the reproductive and sexual health needs of individual women, men and couples rather than on demographic targets. The analysis aims at establishing a framework for the development of the UNFPA-assisted country programme within` the context of the country's overall strategies and needs,as well as within LNTPA's mandate and comparative advantage:UNTPA's mandate is to assist developing countries, at their request, to improve reproductive health care and to promote sustainable development. Reproductive health care includes family planning, sexual health, information and counselling, and medical services, all on the basis of individual choice. The Fund also supports integration of population into development strategies, capacity building for generating and utilising data for policies and programmes, research and training on population and development.

Research about the effects of breastfeeding on maternal health has concentrated primarily on breast cancer, bone loss, and maternal depletion. Breastfeeding may provide some protection against breast cancer, Adequate maternal nutrition, a prolonged period of weaning, and adequate child spacing are expected to alleviate any potential bone loss or maternal depletion caused by breastfeeding. Regardless of no, an, chooses to weigh the relative benefits and risks of breastfeeding to the mother, it seems clear that the programmatic tasks are to see that breastfeeding women are adequately fed and enabled to so...

The Jivit Thmey final evaluation survey was conducted between November 1998 and January 1999. The main objective of this evaluation survey was to assess if the project had achieved the expected impact and effects set for July 1998 (i.e. three years after the project was initiated). A total of 864 households in 72 sample villages were selected from the Jivit Thmey project area, and interviews conducted with 695 currently married women aged 15 to 44. The study also obtained information about the immunization status and prevalence of diseases for children under five years old (698 children). The most important findings of the evaluation survey can be found in this report.

This study projected costs of scaling up government health services to achieve improved health status of the poor and undeserved segments of the Cambodia population.
Three main types of interventions were explored: two alternative interventions for improving the quality of health services, three interventions that improve access to services by the poor, and twelve that target health problems that burden the poor relatively more.
Total and marginal unit costs per capita were estimated by reviewing existing studies of interventions in Cambodia and in other countries with similar health and socioeconomic environments. Where it was relevant, previous efforts to cost interventions and programs were reviewed in detail and some data extrapolated from these.

Neonatal tetanus elimination (NTE) - defined as less than I case of neonatal tetanus per 1,000 live births in each district - is one of the World Summit Goals for the year 2000.
Considering the estimated number of neonatal tetanus cases each year in Cambodia, it is beyond doubt that elimination of neonatal tetanus would have a great impact on child survival. It is realistic to expect that Cambodia will achieve the goal of neonatal tetanus elimination by 2005 by.......
To achieve and sustain the MNTE goal, there is a need to maintain high DPT3 coverage and introduce Td for primary school entry as well as maintaining high TT2+ coverage for CBAW through routine immunzation services. ANC visits will be important occasion to promote deliveries by skilled medical personnel and clean delivery practices, either in the health facilities or at home.

A Knowledge, Practice, and Coverage (KPC) survey was conducted by NCCSP in the Chhlong Operational District of Kratie province, Cambodia, from May 24-31, 1999. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on the knowledge and practices of mothers of children less than two years old related to breastfeeding/nutrition, diarrheal disease, respiratory illness, and maternal care. The survey also assessed the level of immunization and vitamin A coverage of children less than two in the project area. Information from this survey serves as a baseline for NCCSP. It will be used to refine current project plans and as background information for the development of a Detailed Implementation Plan.

This manual describes the use of the partograph as a tool to help in the management of labour. A partograph is used to record all observations made on a woman in labour. Its central feature is a graph, where dilatation of the cervix as assessed by vaginal examination is plotted. By noting the rate at which the cervix dilates, it is possible to identify women whose labours are abnormally slow and who require special attention. These women are at risk of developing prolonged and obstructed labour due to cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD), which may lead to serious problems, such as ruptureduterus and death of the fetus. Other problems that may result from slow progress in labour include postpartum haemorrhage and infection.

TBAs in the community are well placed to provide advice and basic health education. If they receive training to enhance their practices and encourage referrals to government health facilities, it will have a positive impact on the reproductive health situation in their home communities.
The argument is frequently made these days that training and support of TBAs has not reduced maternal mortality rates worldwide. However, it is possible to determine some TBA outputs on a smaller scale, such as monitoring the number of appropriate referrals and the number of deliveries that TBAs perform in collaboration with a trained midwife. The latter will shed light on the level of community links between TBAs and government health facilities.

The IUD is one of the most popular contraceptive methods in urban areas of Cambodia.Despite its popularity there are a number of quality of care issues which are often raised as being of concern about the use of IUDs in Cambodia. One of the key indicators of quality of care at the time of insertion is the rate of early discontinuation of the method (i.e. less than one year). In order to determine the rate and circumstances of early discontinuation and to identify avoidable factors, FPIA in collaboration with UNFPA and CARE conducted a follow up study of IUD acceptors from the FPIA/FHSP clinic in Phnom Penh. The survey interviewed 275 IUD clients who had an IUD inserted at the FPIA/FHSP clinic in Phnom Penh between 1 October 1994 and 31 May 1996.

Cambodia is just now emerging from over two decades of extreme isolation from
most of the world. This study is one of the first to describe current beliefs and practices of Khmer women surrounding pregnancy and birth. While the results of this study can be used to fill gaps in understanding and will be of interest to anthropologists and other students of Khmer culture, these results can also be used to inform those determining health policy and planning health programs to decrease maternal mortality.

Reproductive and sexual health is a right or both men and women-so agreed 180 nations at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994. The nations declared their goal: to achieve universal access to reproductive health information and services by the year 2015.
Yet millions still suffer from disease, injustice, injury, stunted lives, and even death when this right is denied.
Most of these people are women, and most of these women are in the developing world.
